Born and raised in the suburbs outside of Chicago, IL, David has always had a passion for country music. He grew up listening to his mom and dad’s old records and 8-track tapes, soaking in the sounds of legends like Johnny Cash, Faron Young, Conway Twitty, Hank Williams, Sr., Loretta Lynn, and many others. It was clear from a young age that David was destined for a career in music.
As we chatted in his cozy Denver-area studio, David shared with me the story of how he got his start in the industry. “I got my first guitar when I was 4-years old. It was really the only thing I wanted, that and a string so I could wear it strapped to my back just like Johnny Cash. I actually wrote a song called, “Borrowed Cash,” that tells my story. I started playing at church when I was in my teens, and then coffee houses in my early 20s and 30s, and finally in local bars and honky-tonks when I was in my 40s,” he said. “I was always drawn to the raw emotion and storytelling in country music, and I knew that I wanted to share that with the world.”
David’s hard work and dedication paid off, having performed several times with WS “Fluke” Holland, Johnny Cash’s drummer for nearly 40 years, in his show called, “He Wore Black, a Johnny Cash Tribute,” the original Johnny Cash tribute concert experience. This show soon caught the attention of industry insiders leading to his debut album, “Borrowed Cash,” which was met with critical acclaim and solidified his place as a rising star in the country music scene. His heartfelt ballads and infectious melodies have struck a chord with fans all around the country, and thanks to the internet, the world.
When asked about his songwriting process, David explained, “I draw inspiration from my own experiences and the world around me. My songs are like snapshots of moments in time, capturing the highs and lows of life.” Chapa, as his fans and friends refer to him, has written hundreds of songs, some as light-hearted as his parody song called, “Sound of Violence,” and other serious, heart-felt songs yet to be recorded such as, “She only loves Me on the rocks,” “The one you Love,” and “I ain’t never been to Heaven.” His authenticity and vulnerability shine through in his music, making it easy for listeners to connect with this songs on a personal level. He has plans to release a third album with all of his original tunes later this year.
As our interview drew to a close, I asked David about his plans for the future. “I want to continue creating music that resonates with people and brings them joy,” he said. “I have big dreams of headlining my own tour one day and sharing my music with fans all over the world.”
